Fundraising Ideas
Funding can be a challenging issue for facilities when trying to continue or create a bereavement program. If you are having a difficult time finding funding for the Memory Box, Keepsake Impressions Kits, Remembrance Box, Preshand System, or any other bereavement tool to help grieving parents that come to you for care, you are not alone. Below are some ideas that other facilities have shared with us which have proven to be successful. We hope you find these helpful:
-
Look within your facility to various groups, such as the auxiliary, a foundation, guild, or parent support group; they may be willing to help. (There are a few facilities that even receive support from personal donations from physicians within their facility!)
-
Seek out philanthropic groups in your community, such as Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary Groups, The Officers’ Wives’ Club, Religious Organizations, Girl Scout Troops, Women’s Leagues, College Sororities, Fraternities, or Service Groups at the local High School (they can hold bake sales, car washes, and fund raisers on your behalf). These groups are often looking for places they can help, but don’t know where to look. Educate them by explaining why you need their help.
-
Ask Local Businesses for support; many look for small, community-focused projects to help with donations.
-
Look into writing a grant to fund your bereavement program. You may be surprised to learn that some of the large companies that supply you with patient/consumer products have unrestricted grants available that you may not know existed. We have a sample-on-loan program available for you to show a committee what they may be helping to fund. This allows them to better understand how they will be helping to provide support to the families in your community. (consider the Custom Memorial Card to acknowledge the grant source as well)
-
Offer the Keepsake Impressions Kits for sale (at a retail price) to parents of well babies by creating a display that includes a sign in the Nursing Room, Parents’ Lounge, and/or Nurses’ Station that reads something like, "Proceeds from the sale of each Keepsake Impressions Kit will be used to help fund keepsakes for our Bereavement Program". This is an excellent way for families of well babies to capture their baby's tiny impressions, while at the same time help to fund your department's bereavement program.
-
Place an espresso cart, run by volunteers, near the main entrance to the Birthing Center, Women’s Center, Labor and Delivery, NICU, etc. Espresso carts are a quick way to raise money. Perhaps different guilds or volunteer groups could split the volunteer time and split the proceeds. One hospital in particular recommended this idea stating, “The amount of income surprised us. We made more money than we know what to do with!” Already have a cart? Ask if you can place a donation cup on the counter (many have found more than just spare change!).

There are some baby photography companies that may offer a program to help provide assistance in purchasing Memory Boxes to give to your bereaved families. Ask your field representative if this might be possible for your facility.
